Sesame Tofu

I love how easy it is to totally change tofu by using different marinades, or cooking methods. This time, I  marinated the tofu before oven baking and folding through sauce, then finally serving with boiled broccoli.

Yield; Four servings Cook time; 30 minutes (approx)

For the marinade you’ll need;

  1. Two tablespoons of toasted sesame oil
  2. Two tablespoons of soy sauce
  3. One tablespoon Chinese five spice
  4. Half a teaspoon of ginger
  5. One minced clove of garlic
  6. Two tablespoons of water
  7. Half a teaspoon of demerara sugar
  8. A sprinkle of black pepper


  • Drain and press a 400g block of tofu before cutting into chunks.
  • Whisk together the marinade in a dish until well combined.
  • Place the tofu in an air tight container before pouring over the marinade. Refrigerate for a minimum of 30 minutes, longer if you aren’t pushed for time.
  • Bake on a lined baking tray for 30 minutes at 220ºC until golden brown.

For the sauce you’ll need;

  1. 200ml of vegetable stock
  2. One tablespoon of toasted sesame oil
  3. One teaspoon of Chinese five spice
  4. Half a teaspoon of ginger
  5. A sprinkle of black pepper
  6. One tablespoon of cornflour dissolved in a tablespoon of cold water


  • Heat the oil in a small saucepan over a medium heat.
  • Add in the stock ad spices and bring to a simmer.
  • Add the cornflour slurry and continue simmering for another five minutes until the sauce thickens.

Fold the cooked tofu through the sauce until well coated. I sprinkled a few sesame seeds over the tofu before serving with boiled broccoli. This would be perfect served with rice or noodles.
