Doctor Seaweed’s Weed & Wonderful – Review

*This post contains gifted products. I did not pay for them, all opinions however are my own* I was kindly given some products by Seaweed & Co to try. I was given the smoked Scottish seaweed infused rapeseed oil, and the intense smoked seaweed infused oil. The first oil I tried was in intense smoked one. I thought it must be strong stuff as the bottle is small and comes with a dropper.

I was right.

The smoked smell is obvious as soon as you unscrew the dropper top. I’ve used liquid smoke before and expected something similar.

This time I wasn’t right.

The smoked smell is there of course, only it doesn’t smell artificial like liquid smoke does, and this oil is so much more well rounded in both flavour and scent. The seaweed flavour is subtle so it adds a wonderful umami flavour, rather than a strong hit of seaweed.

As a little goes a long way, I decided to try it dropped on top of mushrooms on toast. So I fried some mushrooms in dairy free butter, along with a little garlic, tarragon, and a couple of tablespoons of non dairy cream. Then I lightly toasted some sourdough bread and plated it up.

The best mushrooms on toast I’ve ever had. As a fan of mushrooms, seaweed and smoked flavours, this was perfect for me. Then, continuing with the mushroom theme, I whipped up some creamy mushroom soup. I topped the soup with plenty of freshly cracked black pepper, along with the oil.

Again it was brilliant. I’m already thinking of other ways to use it. I’m thinking salads, sauces and dips perhaps?

Next I tried the smoked seaweed infused oil. I decided to add it into a cherry tomato pasta sauce. If you cook and cover whole pack of cherry tomatoes, they pop open and cook down into a brilliant sauce.

I flavoured the sauce with a handful of grated non dairy mozzarella, basil, oregano and a drizzle of oil. The smoked flavour really complimented the natural sweetness from the tomatoes really well.

All in all I was very impressed with both of the oils. I’m looking forward to using them in other dishes, and will definitely be buying more when I run out!
