This crispy smoky tofu is perfect for breakfasts, and it’s great for sandwiches too. You only need five ingredients for the marinade, and it’s really easy to make. I love making a batch of this, eating some while it’s hot, and saving the rest for sandwiches. I served this with fried mushrooms, tomatoes, a creamy tofu scramble and some toast. I’ll also include how I make the tofu scramble, it has a great egg flavour and texture
Yield; Two to three servings Cook time; 15 minutes
You’ll need;
- 200g firm tofu, I use half a 400g block of Cauldron tofu
- One tablespoon of soy sauce
- One tablespoon of ketchup
- Two teaspoons of smoked paprika
- Two teaspoons of liquid smoke
- One teaspoon of lemon juice
Method;
- Start by pressing the tofu, the more water you press out the more marinade it will absorb. You can do this by using a tofu press, or by wrapping the tofu in paper towel/tea towel, then top it with a plate/chopping board, and add some weight on top
- Once the tofu has been pressed it can be marinated. To make the marinade, simply whisk together the last five ingredients listed above
- Take one third of the marinade and spoon/brush it onto the bottom of a large flat dish. Thinly slice the tofu (I usually get around ten slices out of it) and place the slices into the dish. Finally spoon/brush the remaining marinade evenly over the top of them
- Cover the dish with a little cling film or foil, then pop it into the fridge for a minimum of 30 minutes
- Once you’re ready to cook the tofu, heat a teaspoon or so of oil in a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat
- Place the tofu into the pan, leave it untouched to cook for six or seven minutes. Then carefully turn the tofu and give it another six or seven minutes for the other side to cook
Once it’s crispy on both sides, it’s ready to serve. Alternatively you can serve it onto a kitchen roll lined plate, then allow it to cool completely. Store the tofu in an airtight container in the fridge. It’s great with sliced tomato, lettuce and a little egg free mayonnaise for a meat free BLT

My Top Tofu Scramble Tips
It’s easy to make, and has that familiar egg texture and flavour. I’ve also included where to get the ingredients, what kind of tofu is best to use, other things you can add into your scramble etc etc
I am very curious about what liquid smoke is…and where to obtain it.

It’s a flavouring made by burning wood, then cooling and condensing the smoke, suspending the smoke in water vapour. I find it in large supermarkets, speciality food shops, and it’s also sold online from various different websites. I hope this helps 🙂
